Facing increasing losses, Singapore-based electronics maker Creative Technology has filed two legal actions against Apple Computer on Monday, claiming that the popular iPod violates its patents. This isn’t at all surprising, since Creative has said they planned to sue Apple end of last year. However, it apparently took them five months of negotiations to realize that Apple was not going to license their patent, and that they really need to sue.

In a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission, Creative is asking for an injunction stopping Apple from selling the iPod and iPod Nano in the United States. Separately, Creative has also sued Apple in U.S. District Court in California, seeking damages.
In the center of Creative’s lawsuit is an invention on user interface software used by most portable digital media players, including the iPod. This invention is protected by a 2005 patent entitled “Automatic Hierarchical Categorization of Music by Metadata,” (U.S. Patent No. 6,928,433) Creative said.

The NW-E003 is Sony’s latest attempt to corner the ultra-portable mp3 player market. With this new gadget, cool is definitely an understatement. There is a variety of memory sizes and vibrant colours to choose from, ranging from 512MB, 1GB and 2GB. All memory sizes support MP3, Altrac and WMA. Too bad, no DRM (digital rights management) support.
The Sony Walkman NW-E003 has impressive sound, but the feature set is definitely limited compared to HDD-based players with larger screens.

Along with a truly comprehensive feature set, the PM-304AF excels with the quality of its construction. The metal backed casing feels great in your hands. The new full-colour LCD 65,000 colours display is vibrant and impressive both for photo viewing and for MTV playback. Sound quality is powerful with a 40mW combined rating on both channels. The PM-304AF is also one of the best portable MP3 players for voice/lecture recording. The player is recognised as a Removable Disk Drive when connected to any PCs for up to 2GB of storage space. A built-in Lithium polymer rechargeable battery allows up to 15 hours of battery life.

MIT graduates James Patten and Ben Recht developed Audiopad, an interactive tabletop system which tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and converts their motion into music.

Audiopad is a composition and performance instrument for electronic music which tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and converts their motion into music. One can pull sounds from a giant set of samples, juxtapose archived recordings against warm synthetic melodies, cut between drum loops to create new beats, and apply digital processing all at the same time on the same table. Audiopad not only allows for spontaneous reinterpretation of musical compositions, but also creates a visual and tactile dialogue between itself, the performer, and the audience.
